Mintz LevinSenator William “Mo” Cowan is Of Counsel to Mintz Levin and Senior Vice President/Chief Operating Officer of ML Strategies, the firm’s government relations affiliate. Prior to rejoining the firm, Senator Cowan represented Massachusetts as interim U. S. Senator.
Prior to the Senate, Senator Cowan served first as Chief Legal Counsel, then Chief of Staff, and later Senior Advisor to Massachusetts Governor Deval L. Patrick. Senator Cowan was the 8th African-American to serve in the U.S. Senate and the 1st African-American to serve as Chief Legal Counsel to a Massachusetts Governor.
Senator Cowan earned his undergraduate degree in sociology from Duke University, and his law degree from Northeastern University.
Senator Cowan has served in leadership roles for public and private organizations including American Constitution Society, Greater Boston YMCA Board of Overseers, Northeastern University, UMass-Boston Center for Collaborative Leadership, Massachusetts High Tech Council, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Eastern Bank Corporation. In 2013 the Concerned Black Men of Massachusetts honored Senator Cowan with their Paul Robeson National Leadership Award.
