A proud Texas Southern University (TSU) alum, Durmerrick reached a landmark settlement with Howard University in 2023 over its handling of a mental health emergency that led to his transfer to TSU in his sophomore year. As part of the settlement, he is now working with students, alumni, and national advocacy groups to propose policy changes that safeguard future students from similar challenges.

Beyond his industry work, Durmerrick is an award-winning performance poet whose writing explores Black and Black-queer experiences, Black faith traditions, and mental health. Durmerrick is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., guided by the Ghanaian philosophy of ubuntu (“I am, because we are”) and the words of Tupac Shakur, “I may not change the world, but I’ll inspire the mind that does.”
