Janet Peguero
Janet Peguero is the current Rezoning Manager for the New York City department of Small Business Services (SBS). In this role she manages the various points of agreements for the agency, as it pertains to recently and previously rezoned neighborhoods. Currently overseeing the agency’s commitment for the Jerome avenue (The Bronx) and Inwood (Upper Manhattan) rezoning plans, Janet is charged with assuring that the agency is connecting the commercial corridor and its residents to existing and newly designed small business services, and workforce resources. Before this role, Janet managed SBS’ free legal services and programs which includes the Commercial lease assistance program, and the Women Entrepreneur (WE) Legal clinics.
Previous to her work with the city, Janet worked as the programs and development associate for the Vance Center for International justice- a program at the City Bar Association, that offers pro bono representation to civil society organizations in Latin America and Africa. During her time at the Vance center, Janet worked and supported different programs and legal cases related to human rights and access to justice and the expansion of pro bono clearing houses in central America.
With a B.A in sociology and Latin American and Caribbean studies, Janet’s passion for urban development is deeply rooted in her upbringing. Born in the Dominican Republic, and raised in Harlem and Washington Heights (NYC)- Janet understands firsthand the power of public servitude and how civic engagement can affect and lead change in communities of color.
