Derek Murphy is the Executive Vice President and General Manager of USA TODAY responsible for leading the development and implementation of brand, operations and business strategies across the enterprise. Murphy has deep experience building brands and growing traditional and digital businesses in the financial services, media and entertainment, and publishing industries. From 2011 to 2013, he was General Manager of Multicultural Media at AOL Huffington Post Media Group where he led the overall strategy, audience development, operations and business performance for the launch and management of several new websites. Murphy joined Huffington Post in 2009 as SVP, Business Development and structured several strategic partnerships resulting in material growth in product offerings, traffic, user engagement and revenues. Prior to joining Huffington Post, Murphy was head of business development at CNN Interactive
and led American Express’ Global Sponsorship Marketing group. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering & Management from Tufts University and an MBA degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is the business sponsor for Gannett’s Leadership and Diversity Council and previously served on the leadership boards of Brewster Academy, South Orange Performing Arts Center and the Council of Urban Professionals.
